
The Izard County High School boys’ basketball team is one win away from its first state championship game appearance in five years. The Cougars squeaked by top-ranked England 65-64 in the quarterfinals of the Class 2A State Tournament Thursday at Cedar Ridge High School in Newark.
Cash Arnhart hit a three to beat the buzzer at the end of regulation and force the first extra period, and Gabe Spray did the same at the end of the first overtime. Arnhart hit the game-winning layup in double overtime for the one-point win.
Spray led Izard County with 21 points, Arnhart scored 16, Kasen Black had 14, and Kade Yancey added 12 points. Izard County improves to 26-11 on the season and will play Saturday against the winner of Friday’s game between Tuckerman and Marianna.

Three area teams played their openers in the Class 3A State Tournament on the south campus of North Arkansas College in Harrison.
Melbourne’s girls were able to advance to Friday’s quarterfinal action after defeating Paris 67-49. The Lady Bearkatz are now 24-9 on the year.
The Mountain View girls will also be playing Friday following their 71-46 victory over Elkins. The Lady Yellowjackets’ record stands at 27-8.
Bergman’s boys watched their season come to an end with a 46-37 loss at the hands of Elkins. The Panthers’ final record is 35-5.

The Rural Special girls invoked the mercy rule in the first quarterfinal game of the Class 1A State Tournament at Trumann. The Lady Rebels routed Scranton 61-26. Rural Special improves to 31-9, and they await the winner of Friday’s game between Greers Ferry West Side and Taylor.

In Missouri, West Plains’ girls topped McDonald County 84-63 in their opener in the Class 5, District 6 Tournament at Willard. The Lady Zizzers now stand at 18-8, and they’ll go up against Springfield Hillcrest in Saturday’s semifinals.
The Hollister girls were eliminated from the Class 4, District 11 Tournament on their home floor. The Lady Tigers fell to Logan-Rogersville 72-23 in the semifinals. Hollister’s season ends at 4-22.
Branson’s girls breezed past Springfield Glendale 60-33 in the first round of the Class 6, District 5 Tournament at Ozark. The Lady Pirates are 16-10 on the year, and they’ll face Nixa in the semifinals on Saturday.
