The University of Arkansas is one of 60 universities under federal investigation by the U.S. Department of Education for allegedly engaging in race-based exclusionary practices in their graduate programs.

The department’s inquiry stems from the university’s partnership with the PhD Project, a nonprofit organization aimed at increasing diversity in business by assisting students from underrepresented groups in pursuing business-related doctoral degrees. However, the Department of Education has raised concerns that the program may restrict eligibility based on race.

This investigation follows a memo issued by the department last month warning institutions that they could face penalties, including the loss of funding, for using race-based criteria in areas such as scholarships, admissions, and hiring.

The Department of Education emphasized that students should be evaluated on merit and achievement rather than race.
