Salem rolls to second round, Melbourne sent home in playoff football

Playoff football continued across Arkansas and southern Missouri on Friday night, with several area teams advancing to the next round while others saw their seasons come to a close.

In Arkansas Class 3A, Salem rolled into the second round with a dominant 54-7 win over Fouke. The Greyhounds will face Newport next week. Mayflower also advanced, defeating Harmony Grove (Ouachita County) 43-7 to set up a matchup with Smackover. Melbourne ended its season on the road, falling to Newport, 48-14.

In Class 5A, the Harrison Goblins delivered what many considered the upset of the night, knocking off top-seeded Valley View 27-13. Harrison moves on to face Parkview in the second round.

In Class 6A, Jonesboro earned a 42-34 win over Southside and will meet Greenwood next week.

Across the state line in Missouri, West Plains kept its postseason run alive with a 36-6 victory over Carl Junction, advancing to the third round. Forsyth saw its season end after a 55-7 loss to Liberty, while Thayer continued its strong playoff push by defeating Marionville 42-21.
