A Mountain Home man whose first criminal case was opened 14 years ago appeared during a session of Baxter County Circuit Court/Criminal Division on November 10.
Thirty-seven-year-old Cory David Elling pled guilty to his most recent charges, including breaking or entering and theft of property. He was sentenced to six years in the Department of Corrections with a judicial transfer to one of the Community Correction Centers in the state for addiction treatment.
In the new case, Elling is accused of breaking into a storage unit and stealing items with an estimated value of about $1,000.
The owner of the storage complex provided police with video from a surveillance camera and Elling was identified as the offender, according to the probable cause affidavit.
When officers contacted Elling, he is said to have admitted breaking into the storage unit because he was high.
ALSO ARRESTED LATE AUGUST
Elling was also arrested in August and charged with possession of drugs and paraphernalia used to ingest drugs.
On August 24, a Baxter County sheriff’s deputy saw Elling driving a vehicle on U.S. Highway 62 East. The deputy reported that he was aware Elling’s driver’s license had been suspended and initiated a traffic stop.
While talking with Elling, the deputy asked him if there was anything in the vehicle that he should know about. Elling is alleged to have said there was a black case on the floorboard containing methamphetamine.
A small plastic bag was found in the case. The contents were described as a crystal-like substance suspected of being methamphetamine.
In addition, various items of drug paraphernalia, including syringes and a set of digital scales, were located.
DRUGS AND THEFT
Through the years, Elling has been mainly charged with breaking or entering and being in possession of drugs and paraphernalia to use drugs.
According to probable cause affidavits, Elling’s main targets in the theft cases were storage units. In one case filed in 2018, Elling was charged with nine counts of breaking or entering at various locations.
During a break-in at one location, Elling was accused of stealing the video surveillance cameras that were installed around the property. A shoeprint taken from one of the storage units broken into led to Elling’s’ arrest.
According to jail records, Elling has been booked into the Baxter County Detention center 22 times.
