STEM Flights, a national nonprofit that uses aviation to spark interest in science and technology careers, is launching free flight-based STEM programs for middle and high school students in the Gassville area.

The program pairs students with volunteer pilot mentors for hands-on aviation lessons followed by a real flight in a small aircraft. Students explore aerodynamics, flight planning, navigation, weather and a wide range of aviation and aerospace career paths along the way.

“Our mission is to open the sky to young people,” said Carley L. Walker, director of business development for STEM Flights. “We are thrilled to bring these life-changing aviation experiences to students in Gassville and help them discover futures in engineering, aviation, and technology.”

After the flight, participants receive mentoring resources, scholarship information and additional STEM learning materials, all at no cost. STEM Flights hopes to reach dozens of area students in its first year of Arkansas programming, working with schools and community partners to expand access.
