A man and woman were arrested early last Tuesday, Nov. 25 after an hours-long domestic dispute involving a firearm and allegations of assault, according to the Baxter County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies were dispatched in the early morning to a home on Avant Circle, where they found Jonathan Cook and his wife, 61-year-old Shamira Daniel, outside the residence. Cook told deputies that Daniel had pointed a gun at him and that he disarmed her before locking himself inside a truck and calling 911. Deputies reported Cook had a busted lip and scratches on his cheek.
Daniel, however, reported a different sequence of events. She told authorities the confrontation began around 8 the previous evening on Highway 101, when Cook allegedly threatened her, stopped their vehicle, broke her cellphone and threw it into a ditch. Daniel, who had visible injuries including a black eye and cuts to her arms and neck, said Cook assaulted her inside the residence, grabbing her by the throat and slamming her head against a wall.
Daniel told deputies she had a pistol in her bag, which officers recovered. Cook claimed the firearm she used belonged to him and said he placed it inside the home. Deputies later found Cook’s firearm under a bed, unloaded and missing its magazine. Cook gave conflicting statements about what he did with the magazine, investigators said.
Deputies also found both rear tires on a Chevrolet 1500 pickup truck had been slashed. Cook admitted cutting the tires to prevent Daniel from leaving, according to the report.
Both Cook and Daniel were arrested and taken to the Baxter County Detention Center.
Cook is charged with domestic battery in the second degree, a C felony, and interference with emergency communications, a misdemeanor. Daniel is charged with domestic battery in the third degree, a misdemeanor.
