Residents in north Arkansas can give their used Christmas trees a second life by donating them to lakes and reservoirs to create fish habitat, the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission said.
The trees provide shelter for small fish, a source of food for aquatic insects and algae, and cover for larger game fish such as bass and crappie.
The AGFC is accepting tree donations through the end of January. Trees must be free of tinsel, lights, ornaments or other decorations. Artificial trees are not accepted because plastics can leach harmful chemicals into the water.
In north Arkansas, trees can be dropped off at Bull Shoals Lake and Norfork Lake at any U.S. Army Corps of Engineers boat ramp.
Biologists recommend tying trees to cinder blocks or sandbags with paracord to keep them submerged until waterlogged. Multiple trees placed together provide longer-lasting cover.
Anglers should check with lake authorities before placing trees to ensure the practice is allowed.
