Stabbing suspect arrested after Benton schools placed on precautionary lockdown

Schools in the Benton School District are no longer under lockdown after a stabbing Thursday morning near Cox Street prompted precautionary safety measures.Benton police say officers responded to a reported stabbing around 9 a.m. Upon arrival, they located the victim, who is now receiving medical treatment. Authorities identified the suspect as 26-year-old Nathaniel Vasquez, who fled the scene before officers arrived but was apprehended a short time later.

District officials said the incident did not occur on school property, but nearby campuses were placed on lockdown out of caution. All students and staff were reported safe.

Officials at Mountain View Elementary clarified that their campus was never in danger and has resumed normal activities. They said the districtwide alert was intended primarily for schools near the high school, junior high and middle school campuses.

The Benton School District said it is continuing to coordinate with local law enforcement as the investigation proceeds.
