Young hunters across Arkansas will take to the woods this weekend for the annual youth turkey hunt, scheduled for Saturday and Sunday.

The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission youth hunt is open to hunters ages 6 to 15 and provides a special early opportunity to pursue wild turkeys ahead of the regular season. The event, established in 2004, is designed to introduce young hunters to the sport alongside a mentor.

Youth hunters are not required to purchase a hunting license but must obtain a free youth turkey tag through the AGFC licensing system. Any turkey harvested must be tagged before moving if it cannot be checked immediately and must be checked within 12 hours.

Participants may harvest one male turkey during the youth hunt, and that bird counts toward the hunter’s seasonal limit.

Hunters who have completed hunter education may hunt independently with parental approval. Those who have not completed the course must remain under the direct supervision of an adult age 21 or older.

More information on Arkansas’s turkey season is available at www.agfc.com/turkey.
