Fifteen local youths took to the skies Saturday as Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 775 hosted a Young Eagles event at Baxter County Airport.
The event was part of the national Young Eagles program, which provides free introductory flights to young people. Volunteer pilots and ground crew members from Chapter 775 gave participants their first experience in a personal aircraft while highlighting opportunities available in aviation.
Each participant received a preflight briefing, explored the aircraft and flew alongside a certified pilot. For many of the attendees, it was their first time flying in a small aircraft.
EAA Chapter 775 President Bill Holland said the event helps introduce young people to aviation while showing them future educational and career opportunities.
Families attending the event also had the opportunity to learn more about general aviation, aircraft maintenance, airport operations and aviation careers.
Chapter 775 plans to host additional Young Eagles rallies and aviation outreach events in the future. The organization meets on the fourth Monday of each month at the Baxter County Airport Terminal Building, with doors opening at 5:30 p.m. and activities beginning at 6.
