The Arkansas State Highway Commission has released the Draft Statewide Transportation Improvement Program (STIP) for Federal Fiscal Years 2027-2030. The plan includes improvements for several area highways including multiple passing lanes in north central Arkansas for U.S. Highway 62/412. All of the passing lanes are all scheduled to be completed in federal fiscal year (FFY) 2029. All of the work on Highway 62/412 is being paid for by the state.
In Marion County, passing lanes are scheduled to be constructed from Snow to Georges Creek, a stretch of 2.37 miles. The estimated cost is $18 million.
Another set of passing lanes are scheduled to be built in Marion and Boone counties from Snow to Harmon, a length of 6.64 miles. That estimated cost is $30 million.
In Fulton County, a single passing lane is planned from the Baxter County line to Arkansas State Highway 87, a length of 1.21 miles. The estimated cost is $5.7 million.
In Baxter County, a major widening project is scheduled for FFY 2029. The project will widen Highway 62/412 from Norfork Lake to the east for 3.14 miles at an estimated cost of $500,000.
In Boone County, a major widening project and intersection improvements are planned for Industrial Park Road and Arkansas State Highway 7 in the city of Harrison in FFY 2029. The estimated cost is $21.7 million.
The largest project along the Highway 412 corridor is a major widening project of U.S. Highway 65 from Arkansas Highway 206 to Western Grove in Boone and Newton counties. The estimated cost is $37.9 million with the work to be done in FFY 2029.
Highway 412 in Arkansas was designated as a High Priority Corridor by Congress in the 1991 Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act. Portions of this 292-mile corridor are signed concurrently as Highways 62, 63,
65 and 67. The Highway 412 Corridor is important to the economy of northern Arkansas.
This corridor is part of the National Highway System, the Department’s Arkansas Primary Highway Network, and the Department’s Four-Lane Grid system. The Department has invested $507 million on this corridor since 2014. In addition, this STIP includes $8 million for bridge replacement projects, $83 million in capacity improvement projects and $106 million in capital improvement projects to improve the Highway 412 Corridor.
Two other projects are scheduled in Izard County, both along Arkansas State Highway 56.
The first is planned for FFY 2028 for Calico Creek Street and approaches with a total estimated cost of $6.3 million.
The second is planned for FFY 2029 for Hars Creek Street and approaches with a total estimated cost of $3.5 million.
There are also two projects planned at two local federal fish hatcheries.
At the Norfork National Fish Hatchery, the state will rehabilitate Rt. #900 and the visitor parking lot in 2027 at a cost of $543,700.
At the Mammoth Spring National Fish Hatchery, the state will repair roads damaged by storms and floods. The work will be done in 2028 at a cost of $324,000.
