The candidate filing period has closed for Fort Smith’s municipal elections, with seven candidates qualifying for the city’s mayoral race.
The candidates are City Director Christina Catsavis, Sara Harrison, Yvette C. Powers, Nataylia Deer, Daniel Williams, City Director Lee Kemp and Shayne McKinney.
Current Mayor George McGill is not seeking reelection after serving since 2019. The winner of the Nov. 3 election will take office Jan. 1, 2027, for a four-year term.
Fort Smith voters may also decide whether to change the city’s form of government. A citizen petition seeking to expand the powers of the elected mayor is undergoing legal review to determine whether it qualifies for the ballot. If the petition meets legal requirements, a special election will be called.
Three seats on the Fort Smith Board of Directors are also on the November ballot. Four candidates filed for At-Large Position 5, while three candidates filed for At-Large Position 6. Incumbent Neal Martin was the only candidate to file for At-Large Position 7 and has been elected without opposition.
