A burn ban is now in effect for Marion County including all unincorporated areas due to extremely dry conditions and increased wildfire hazards.
Marion County Judge Jason Stumph issued the order Wednesday, with the ban taking effect immediately. The order prohibits outdoor burning in unincorporated areas of the county until conditions improve and the ban is lifted by the Marion County Court.
Outdoor burning may be allowed under exceptional circumstances when proper precautions are in place. However, a written permit is required from the fire chief of the appropriate fire protection district or governing body, or their designee, before any outdoor burning can take place.
The Marion County Sheriff’s Office will enforce the burn ban.
Violations are classified as a Class A misdemeanor, punishable by up to one year in county jail and a fine of up to $2,500.
