Insight ComicsA new graphic novel focusing on the late David Bowie‘s rise from obscurity to rock stardom, and the creation of his Ziggy Stardust character, will be released on January 7, 2020, one day before what would’ve been his 73rd birthday.

Bowie: Stardust, Rayguns & Moonage Daydreams was co-written by Steven Horton and Michael Allred, with artwork by Allred and his wife, Laura. Horton’s work includes the acclaimed graphic novel Satellite Rising, while Allred’s credits include such popular comics as Madman, Silver Surfer and Red Rocket 7.

The book features a foreword by Neil Gaiman, author of American Gods, Good Omens and Coraline, among many other titles.

Allred says in a statement, “Everything that has inspired me throughout my life and career can be found intersecting with David Bowie. With my obsessive passion for music, pop art, film, and the electricity of the comic book medium all coming together through the sounds and imagery of his creative output.”

Adds Horton, “[B]eing part of an original graphic novel about my favorite musician is like a dream come true, as is working with artistic legends like the Allreds. Our collective obsession with Bowie has created something special, and I’m immensely proud of it.”

You can check out a few preview pages from the novel at InsightEditions.com. They include depictions of Bowie’s changing looks from childhood to his Ziggy Stardust persona, a scene from the historic 1973 London concert where he announced the breakup of The Spiders from Mars onstage, a page showing a young Bowie, then known as David Jones, chatting with Steve Marriott and Marc Bolan — the respective future frontmen of Small Faces and T. Rex — about their musical plans.
