On Tuesday morning, the state of Arkansas reportedly filed a lawsuit against the parent companies of Facebook and Instagram, known as Meta Platforms, Inc., and ByteDance, the parent company of Tiktok. Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders and Attorney General Tim Griffin state the lawsuits allege violations of the Arkansas Deceptive Trade Practices Act.

The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reports Sanders said in a news release, “We have to hold Big Tech companies accountable for pushing addictive platforms on our kids and exposing them to a world of inappropriate, damaging content.”

According to KHBS, the first lawsuit claims Meta has concealed the addictive nature of its algorithms on its platforms.

The lawsuits against Tiktok and Bytedance have been filed separately and claim the companies market Tiktok to teenagers and “falsely claim Arkansas user data is not accessible by the Chinese government.”
