An area native who has previously played and coached for the Mountain Home American Legion baseball program is the owner of a league giving college baseball players the opportunity to keep playing once the season is over. J.T. Baker, originally from Salem, is running the Marucci Midwest Arkansas Collegiate League this summer as its season is underway.

Baker’s business venture and league was originally titled Perfect Timing, but it has since been sold to Marucci Midwest. He says he started the collegiate league nine years ago as a way to help the alumni of its youth league and its graduating seniors preparing for college have a place to play.

Baker graduated from Salem High School in 1995, and that was his last year to play for the Mountain Home Lockeroom. He returned to coach for the American Legion program in 1998 and 1999 before he was later hired to coach at Texarkana College in Texas. Baker says playing for Lester White was fun, and it helped him prepare for his current venture.
