A McRae man is facing two felony counts of animal cruelty following a month-long investigation prompted by reports from concerned residents about missing cats and suspicious behavior.

Jack Moore was taken into custody Friday at 11 a.m. by the Bald Knob Police Department at a residence belonging to his brother. Authorities say he became agitated during the arrest and denied the allegations. However, McRae police reported that the investigation yielded sufficient evidence to support the charges.

The investigation began after multiple complaints from local residents regarding animal disappearances and unusual activity in the area. Law enforcement officials say the most serious allegation involves Moore allegedly throwing a live cat into the street, which left the animal paralyzed. While rumors had circulated suggesting the animal was thrown over a house, police stated there was no evidence to support that specific claim, though witness statements corroborated the incident.

In total, five to six cats have been reported missing. During the investigation, officers recovered a pellet rifle believed to have been used in harming the animals. Testing is underway to determine whether the rifle matches pellets found in or near the injured animals.

Moore appeared before a judge Friday and was later released on bond. His next court appearance is scheduled for June 9 at 2 p.m.

Family members and residents have expressed longstanding concerns about Moore’s treatment of animals, citing behavioral patterns that raised red flags. Some allege he used traps in his yard to capture animals, blaming them for harming other pets on his property. Others claim he regularly retrieved a pellet gun after checking the traps.

The arrest has been met with relief by some in the community, where no further animal disappearances have been reported since Moore’s apprehension. The case has also drawn renewed attention to animal welfare efforts in McRae.

The McRae Police Department has emphasized its commitment to investigating such matters thoroughly and ensuring accountability under the law.
