Main Street Calico Rock has been busy preserving its history after spring flooding revealed a potential future threat to some of its long standing structures.
The protect the historic district, a retaining wall and French drain has been constructed behind the Calico Riverview Inn, diverting water away from the buildings. In addition to this project, three roofs on other properties have been replaced in the district, funding has been provided for repairs needed from April flooding and each business in the district has been provided with a tourism promotion grant.
These projects were made possible through funding provided by Main Street Calico Rock and Main Street Arkansas. Proceeds from the 1/8 cent sales tax benefiting historic preservation in Arkansas were used.
Main Street Calico Rock Executive Director Bambi Bowden says “Our community has invested over $4 million in revitalizating our downtown over the past fifteen years. As stewards of these historic assets, it’s our duty to protect that investment by insuring we prevent potential issues from arising which could wipe our those investments in minutes.”
Tracy Owens, Calico Riverview Inn proprietor, says “We are preservation proponents. The historic buildings that hold our history and tell the stories of who we are as a community deserve to be preserved. We are grateful to Main Street Calico Rock and Main Street Arkansas.”
