On Nov. 3, Tony Faiz Khayat was awarded the “I Partner With My Public Library Award” through an online ceremony presented by Let’s Move in Libraries.
This national award recognizes community partners who collaborate with their public library to transform communities through public health initiatives. The Let’s Move in Libraries project focuses on supporting healthy living in public libraries and works to increase physical activity through libraries in the U.S., Canada, and other places around the world.
The Baxter County Library nominated Khayat for the award for his contributions to the community. He was one of 10 Awardees in 2023 chosen from over 50 nominations from 22 states. His yoga classes attracts students ages 18-94, and over the years he has taught over 750 students. Khayat does not charge for his classes, but instead accepts small donations to the Library. Over the years, contributions have amassed an estimated $88,000.
Khayat’s journey began his yoga career 1978 when he received training at the Bikram Yoga Studio in San Francisco. Locally, he has taught at his own studio from 1990 to 1993 and extended his experience to local health clubs, Baxter Health, and North Arkansas Community College, now known as Arkansas State University in Mountain Home, until his retirement in 1995.
Upon his retirement, Khayat was approached to teach a yoga class for employees and library patrons. His style of yoga promotes fitness, stress relief and tension reduction. Khayat students have stated they have seen improved muscle tone and flexibility, with many attributing their physical well-being to his classes. Khayat’s philosophy is centered on “doing what you can and finding something that works,” ensuring that all students, regardless of physical challenges, feel comfortable and encouraged in his classes.
Recently, the Little Rock Veterans’ Center requested Khayat introduce yoga to veterans at the Bob Davis Veterans Center in Mountain Home. In addition to his library classes, Khayat regularly donates his time to work with these veterans in coordination with a Vet Center Readjustment Counselor.
Library Director Kim Crow Sheaner, says “Seldom does a library partner like Khayat come along-someone so talented, dependable, and insperational. We realize how fortunate we are to have enjoyed such longevity with Khayat and that he has chosen to devote himself to the Library and his students. We look forward to many more years of his classes.”
