Mountain Home native Jeannie Alley has a lifelong passion for reading and enjoys sharing books with her friends and family. In fact, one of her favorite gifts to give friends, especially children and expectant mothers, are books. A retired educator, Alley is an accomplished organist, pianist and world traveler who spends her winters in Dallas, where she taught school. But come spring, she returns to here roots, Mountain Home.
When Alley came home this year, she brought with her an idea which she shared with her friend, Estella Tullgren, Baxter Regional Hospital Foundation Planned Giving Officer. The idea of giving each baby born at Baxter Regional Medical Center a book.

The book each baby will receive is called READ TO ME by Judi Moreillon. Alley says the idea came to her when she read a story about Moreillon and her book in a Dallas newspaper.

Tullgreen describes the simply written, beautifully illustrated book as Alley's legacy to future generations of Mountain Home children.

Both Alley and Tullgren strongly believe in the importance of reading to children. Baxter County Library Director Kim Crow-Sheaner agrees, calling reading to a child the greatest gift you can give them.

Crow-Sheaner says this book Alley is giving to each new-born could be the beginning of the 1000 Books Before K program at the library. The program is designed to boost the learning potential of children through reading before they enter kindergarten.
