1 in 3 children in NC Arkansas struggle with hunger

     Childhood hunger is more than a third-world problem, it exists across the United States and here in the Twin Lakes Area. According to government statistics, one in every five children in the US is considered food insecure or unsure of when and where they will get their next meal. In Arkansas, which ranks 7th in the country for childhood hunger, one in four children are considered food insecure. But in the Twin Lakes Area that statistic is even more staggering, according to Jeff Quick, Chief Executive Officer of the Food Bank of North Central Arkansas.

          Many of these children rely on the free and reduced meals, breakfast and lunch, they receive at school.

     Hunger has a significant impact on a child’s educational, emotional and mental growth and development, says Quick.

     Eliminating childhood hunger is the goal of the No Kid Hungry Campaign of Share Our Strength, a national program like Feeding American, of which the Food Bank of North Central Arkansas is a part.

     The next segment in this series on the No Kid Hunger Campaign of the Food Bank of North Central Arkansas will focus programs of the campaign including Back Pack programs which provides weekend meals, summer meal programs when school is out of session and programs for the entire family like Cooking Matters and Shopping Matters which focus on healthy meal planning on a budget.
