Donald W. Reynolds Library sets Issues and Viewpoints for Wednesday

Donald W Reynolds Library serving Baxter County will host another Issues and Viewpoints book discussion Wednesday afternoon at 1:30. This month’s discussion will focus on Arkansas Heritage with a choice of two books — “Ghost of the Ozarks” or “Stolen Water, Forgotten Liberties.”

“Ghost of the Ozarks” by Brooks Blevins is set in 1929 in the Ozarks. The book is about a gruesome murder of harmonica-playing drifter Connie Franklin and the brutal rape of his teenage fiancee. Set during the time of the Great Depression, this book captured the attention of the nation during that time period. Five local men were charged and arrested in this confused and superstious Stone County within the Ozarks.

“Stolen Water, Forgotten Liberties” by Jenny Barnes Butler is a fascinating memoir detailing the life and experiences of Joe Barnes. Barnes was a husband, a World War II veteran and the owner of the largest canoe and fishing rental service on the Arkansas Buffalo River. More than a memoir, this is the story of a community bound together by the river that provided sustenance and livelihood only to see it all threatended in 1972 when the National Park Service took control of the river and designated it a national river.

The Issues and viewpoints discussions are held the first Wednesday of each month, and they are free and open to the public. For more information, contact Vincent Anderson at vincent.a@baxlib.org or 870-580-0932, or go online to baxlib.org.
