Mailboat RecordsSammy Hagar has just released a new solo compilation titled This Is Sammy Hagar — When the Party Started, Volume One, which takes a look at the music he’s made since parting ways with Van Halen in the late 1990s. The 14-track album focuses on his work with his longtime backing group The Wabos, and includes such tunes as “Stand Up,” “Serious Juju,” “Ten 13” and “Halfway to Memphis.”

This Is Sammy Hagar also features two previously unreleased songs, “No Worries” and “Never Said Goodbye,” as well as alternate mixes of “Shag” and “Sam I Am.”

As Hagar explains in a message posted on his official website, he decided to form The Wabos after leaving Van Halen, “as an alternative to the superstar big-time, high-maintenance commercial world I had been living in since I joined Montrose in 1972.”

The Red Rocker notes that he and the band — keyboardist Jesse Harms, drummer David Lauser, guitarist Vic Johnson and bassist Mona –“locked ourselves in my basement studio [and] rehearsed and recorded anything and everything I wrote.” He adds that they produced and engineered their recordings themselves using Pro Tools, and went on to build “a hard-core following of ‘Redheads'” while playing concerts “anywhere and everywhere without a set list.”

Hagar says of the compilation, “These are some of the special songs, and some of the special times in my musical life, that I want to share with you in this special collection.”
