Dr. Jake Long on proposed cell phone ban

A proposed House Bill 1036, filed by State Representative Republican Kim Hendren of Gravette of the 91st General Assembly, would ban the use of portable electronic devices in public schools, including cell phones, if it is passed next year. Hendren says it would be up to each school in the district to establish a secure designated area within a school to store the devices at the beginning of the day and returning them when the school day is over.

Mountain Home Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Jake Long says he would prefer to see more of a compromise rather than banning cell phone use altogether.

The bill proposes a ban on cell phones, paging devices, beepers, digital media players, portable game consoles and digital video or audio recorders.

Long says he will let the Mountain Home School Board decide what’s best for students.
