A year later, Searcy Co. dog massacre still unsolved crime

A year ago, just days before Christmas, came the shocking news from Searcy County of an apparent massacre of 57 dogs in the Chimes-Trace Ridge Area south of Marshall. Six dogs survived the horrific event which gained national attention and brought help and donations to the struggling Humane Society of Searcy County.

Today, the $8,000 reward remains in place and the case is still under investigation, according to Searcy County Sheriff Joey Pruitt who says he hasn’t had any information or leads in quite a while.

Jean Passmore, treasurer of the humane society, during follow up visits to the site, more bodies were found and the number of dogs who were killed grew to over 60. But, six survived, including one, names Rasputin, which was had severe gunshot wounds to the face and another, Dini, who eluded efforts to rescue her for days, according to Passmore.

When the story broke, the metal roof, open-air shelter, was poorly funded and in need of repairs. Thanks to the generous outpouring of support the shelter has new managers and is better able to care for the five survivors and others.
