Jeff Kravitz/Getty Images via ABC; Eric Ryan AndersonThe nominations for the 89th annual Academy Awards will be announced this morning at starting at 8:18 a.m. ET, and a number of famous veteran music stars are in the running to a nod in the Best Original Song category. Among the 91 tunes are eligible to be nominated for the honor are songs by Stevie Wonder, Sting and Peter Gabriel.
Wonder’s eligible song is “Faith,” which was co-written with OneRepublic frontman Ryan Tedder for the animated film Sing. The tune, which Stevie sings as a duet with pop starlet Ariana Grande, recently received a Golden Globe Award nomination for the Best Original Song — Motion Picture prize, but it lost out to “City of Stars” from La La Land. In 1984, Wonder took home the Best Original Song Oscar for “I Just Called to Say I Love You” from The Woman in Red.
Sting’s Oscar-eligible tune is “The Empty Chair” from Jim: The James Foley Story, while Gabriel’s “The Veil” from Snowden also is a possible nominee.
To be eligible for an Oscar nod, songs have to include original words and music specifically written for a film. The tune also has to be heard during the movie, or be the first one to play over the end credits.
