
Mammoth Spring’s high school basketball teams picked up a pair of victories over Hillcrest Thursday at Lynn.
The boys’ game ended with the Bears clinching a conference tournament first round bye and a regional tournament berth as they defeated the Screamin’ Eagles 55-39. Sagen Godwin led Mammoth Spring with 18 points, and Len Powell added ten. The Bears improve to 19-7 on the season, and they’ll return to the home court Monday to face Viola.
Mammoth Spring also took the girls’ contest over Hillcrest by a final of 59-47. The Lady Bears were led by Stephine Henry with 21 points, Terra Godwin scored 15, and Lauren Mitchell chipped in 11 points and grabbed ten rebounds. Mammoth Spring is now 11-14 on the year, and their next game will be Tuesday when they host Flippin.
Gainesville’s girls suffered their first loss of the season on Thursday in a battle of state ranked teams in class 2. The third ranked Lady Bulldogs fell at fifth ranked Thayer by a score of 44-43.
Gainesville led 23-16 at halftime. Thayer was up by one with 12 seconds left when they missed a free throw and Gainesville got the rebound but Thayer got a steal on the other end to seal the vistory.
The Lady Bulldogs fall to 17-1 on the season while Thayer improves to 18-1..
Izard County grabbed a pair of boys’ victories over Melbourne in the semifinals of the Izard County Invitational Tournament at Calico Rock.
In the senior high game, the Cougars topped the Bearkatz 68-55. Justus Cooper was Izard County’s top scorer with 23 points, Taylor Reynolds had 15, and Tanner Brooks finished with 12. The Cougars’ record is now 25-8.
Izard County also won the junior boys’ game over Melbourne 40-33. Noah Everett paced the Junior Cougars with 14 points, and Coby Everett ended up with 12. Izard County improves to 16-4 on the season.
Yellville-Summit had a rough outing in a battle between Junior Lady Panthers. Yellville-Summit lost to Bergman 49-28.
Mountain Home had a pair of junior high boys’ losses to Harrison.
The Eighth Grade Bombers fell to the Eighth Grade Goblins 26-7.
The seventh grade contest required overtime as Mountain Home lost to Harrison 36-32. The Seventh Grade Bombers were led by Dodge Harris with 11 points.
