Gearl Adams’ attempt to change his plea on charges filed against him as the result of an altercation at a local business and a tussle with a Baxter County Deputy Sheriff came off the rails during a session of Baxter County Circuit Court Thursday when he persisted in making extraneous comments during the sentencing procedure.

After he made one such comment in answer to a question from Circuit Judge Gordon Webb, 14th Judicial Prosecutor David Ethredge told the court the state was withdrawing its plea offer and Adams was sent back to the county jail.

The 31-year-old Mountain Home man was arrested in late December when Sergeant Brian Davis responded to a disturbance call at a business along Buzzard Roost Road. When Davis arrived, he made contact with Adams outside the business.

According to court records, when Adams saw Sergeant Davis, he began to walk away, was ordered to stop but refused to comply. When Davis reached for Adams’ arm in order to detain him, he began fighting with the law officer.

Davis attempted to deploy his Taser, but one of the probes didn’t attach rendering the device ineffective. Adams then attempted to tackle Sergeant Davis. Other deputies arrived on the scene to assist Davis and took Adams into custody.

Sergeant Davis sustained injuries to his forehead, nose and face during the scuffle, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

According to court records, Adams and another man — Randy Adams — went to the business to have a phone repaired and the pair became dissatisfied with the speed of the service they were given and began cursing and threatening employees at the business.

Randy Adams also faces charges related to the incident.
