Lady Bombers win thriller at Beebe, tough loss for Bombers

The Mountain Home High School basketball teams made the trip to Beebe Friday night and for the Lady Bombers, it was a thrilling finish to their game while the Bombers suffered a tough loss. Brad Haworth had the details.

For three and a half quarters, it was a defensive struggle in the girl’s game but after Beebe had opened up a nine point lead midway through the fourth quarter, Moutain Home got the offense going and picked up a thrilling 30-29 win. The game was tied at 27 when the Lady Badgers’ Katie Turner was fouled while making a shot with 5.5 seconds left. She went to the line with the free throw that led the the improbable finish to the game.

The game did not seem destined for a finish like that early on. In fact, thanks to stellar man to man defense, neither team even made it to double digits in scoring in the first half. Mountain Home was ahead 9-8 at halftime. Beebe led 15-12 heading in the final quarter where the offenses finally came alive.

Payton Huskey hit three key three pointers in the fourth quarter and finished with 11 points while Hannah Pfiefer had 10 points. The Lady Bombers improve to 14-11 overall and 7-3 in the 6A/5A-2 District.

For Beebe, who only hit two of seven free throws in the fourth quarter, including missing two front ends of one and ones, they fall to 17-8 and 7-3.



In the boy’s game, it was a wild back and forth affair with the Badgers squeaking out the 37-33 win. The largest lead for either team was four points and the game featured 14 lead changes and six ties.

Both teams had 8-0 runs in the first half with the score tied at halftime. The second half went back and forth but Mountain Home had trouble keeping the ball with 17 turnovers in the game and Beebe’s K.J. O’Neill hit a pair of free throws with 19 seconds left for the win.

O’Neill finished with 11 points as Beebe impoves to 13-12 and 7-3.

Mountain Home got 15 points from David Wehmeyer as the fall to 9-15 and 4-6.



THe Mountain Home teams will host Greenbrier Tuesday night. And this reminder, the games next Friday at Searcy have been moved to Thursday night.
