The girls’ contest needed overtime as the Lady Bombers defeated the Lady Lions 56-50. The teams went back and forth with each other throughout the game. Mountain Home ended each of the first two quarters with a two-point lead, but Searcy was up by two at the end of the third period. The Lady Bombers were up by two in the final seconds of regulation until the Lady Lions’ Ta’Lor Branch hit a layup to force the extra period. In overtime, Searcy only managed to add a pair of free throws, and they ended up being forced to put Mountain Home on the line. The Lady Bombers took advantage and went on to post the six-point victory.
Hannah Pfiefer led Mountain Home with 22 points, Vinessa Daniel scored 17, and Alivia O’Brien added 12. For the Lady Lions, Kayla Churchwell had 13 points, and Branch and Allie Brown each finished with 11.
The Lady Bombers improve to 16-11 on the season and 9-3 in the 6A/5A-2, and Searcy falls to 8-18 and 2-10. The two teams will play again Saturday at Mountain Home to open the 6A-East Conference Tournament.
The boys’ game also went down to the wire as Mountain Home edged out the Lions 44-41. After the Bombers went up 6-4, they went on a long scoring drought that extended into the second quarter. However, they were able to break the drought and go into the locker room tied at 21. The two teams swapped leads through much of the second half. Garrett Dietsche exploded for ten fourth quarter points, and that contributed to Mountain Home grabbing a lead they would hang on to in the final minute of the contest.
The Bombers were led by Dietsche with 17 points, and David Wehmeyer chipped in 13. Malik Branch scored 14 points for Searcy, and Freddie Hicks had ten.
Mountain Home is now 10-16 on the year and 5-7 in the district, and the Lions are 8-18 and 2-10. The Bombers begin conference tournament play Saturday by traveling to West Memphis.
