Mountain Home resident Mike Kerlin is cautioning area residents of an apparent phishing scheme.
Kerlin says he received a phone call Friday morning from a female caller identifying herself as a representative of the Social Security Administration and Medicare, saying she wanted to update his records.
Kerlin says when he began to question the caller, the call was discontinued.
He says his caller I-D indicated it was an “unknown caller.”
Earlier this year, the Acting Inspector General of Social Security issued a warning about a nationwide telephone imposter phishing scheme, after receiving reports about persons receiving calls similar to Kerlin’s.
The Acting Inspector General says investigators occasionally contact citizens by telephone for investigative purposes, but they will not request sensitive personal information from a citizen over the phone.
If a person receives a similar suspicious call from someone alleging to be from the OIG, citizens may report that information to the OIG at 1-800-269-0271 or online via https://oig.ssa.gov/report.
