Mountain Home Police Department’s K9, Benga, assisted his handler Sergeant Jonathan Griffin with a drug arrest Thursday afternoon that began with a seat belt violation.

Mountain Home Police Chief Carry Manuel says Sergeant Griffin stopped a vehicle driven by 54-year-old Ross Rains of Mountain Home for not wearing a seat belt.

When Sergeant Griffin ran Benga around Rains’ vehicle, he alerted on the driver’s side door. A search of the driver’s side and center console led to the discovery of a small black container with 1.3 grams of suspected methamphetamine. Also located inside the center console was a metal tin containing 3.1 grams of suspected marijuana, along with meth and marijuana pipes.

Rains allegedly admitted the items were his and the white crystal substance was methamphetamine, which field tested positive.

He has been charged with possession of a controlled substance, methamphetamine, and possession of drug paraphernalia, both felony offenses, as well as two misdemeanor counts.

Rains was booked into the Baxter County Detention Center Thursday afternoon on a $2,500 bond and released later that day.

He is scheduled to appear in Baxter County Circuit Court in September.
