Five volunteer fire departments in Ozark County recently received matching grants through the Volunteer Fire Assistance Program coordinated by the Missouri Department of Conservation’s Forestry Division and the U.S. Forest Service. According to the Ozark County Times, Tecumseh, Wasola, Lick Creek, Pontiac/Price Place and Theodosia were among 169 fire departments awarded the grants.

The checks totaled over $360,000 for 2017, and they’re worth up to $4,000 for each department to assist in purchasing personal protective gear and firefighting equipment for wildfires or structure fires. Fire departments are required to match half of the funds.

More than eight million dollars have been distributed over the last 30 years to rural fire departments in Missouri to help them increase firefighters’ safety and provide them with better equipment that may be otherwise unattainable.
