Michael Cox, who faces charges of rape, domestic assault and first degree burglary in Ozark County, was in Baxter County Circuit Court Thursday on less serious charges pending against him here.Cox, who has listed addresses in Gainesville and Mountain Home on various documents associated with his court cases in both Missouri and Arkansas, will now be taken back to Ozark County to deal his legal problems there. A trial on his Baxter County charges is now set for late October.

The 28-year-old Cox was arrested in Mountain Home February 23rd after methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia were found in his vehicle. Cox was initially pulled over when a Mountain Home police officer spotted him not wearing his seat belt. The officer was also aware that Cox’s driver’s license had been suspended.

As the officer was positioning his patrol car to initiate the traffic stop, the officer saw Cox, who was driving the vehicle at the time, switch places with a female passenger.

Cox was reported to have been argumentative throughout the stop, claiming not to have been driving the vehicle. He continued to argue with the officer and refused to submit to arrest.

He was finally taken into custody after the officer threatened to deploy his Taser. A search of Cox’s vehicle turned up a substance that field-tested positive for methamphetamine. In addition, various items of drug paraphernalia were found including digital scales and syringes.

According to the Ozark County Times, Cox was arrested in Gainesville on charges of rape, domestic assault and burglary in connection with an incident that took place at a mobile home park in the Missouri city May 13th.

The newspaper quoted a probable cause affidavit in the case indicating a woman who has a child with Cox and had been in a domestic relationship with him, told Missouri authorities that Cox entered her home uninvited and would not leave even after repeated requests.

She said she went to sleep that night and woke up to find Cox having sexual contact with her without her consent. The woman said later in the morning, Cox had blocked her from leaving her residence. She said Cox then pushed her down on a bed next to their young child and began choking the woman with his hands, only stopping when she was on the verge of losing consciousness.

In his statement to Missouri investigators, Cox is alleged to have related a story similar to the victim’s concerning the events that took place in the residence. He said he had pushed her down on the bed and tried to “choke her out.” He said he stopped when he noticed the young child watching. Cox is alleged to have told Missouri authorities that he was angry with the woman because he believed she had been intimate with another person.

The woman was eventually allowed to leave the residence and went to a neighbor’s home and called the Ozark County Sheriff’s Office to request assistance.

Cox fled out the back door when an Ozark County Deputy Sheriff arrived at the woman’s home.
