Douglas County man held on animal abuse charges

A Douglas County man, 30-year-old Josiah David Wheat of Vanzant, has been charged with felony animal abuse following a social media post leading to calls to law enforcement from across the country and Canada.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office reported receiving numerous calls from the post showing puppies being violently killed by Wheat.

Wheat has been charged with five felony counts of animal abuse. His bond has been set at $15,000, with 10 percent cash or surety. In addition, Wheat is under Court Probation Services and is not to possess any domesticated animal.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office was assisted in the case by the Humane Society.
