Event organizers are expecting about 600 children for the Seventh Annual Norfork National Fish Hatchery Outdoor Adventure Saturday.

Jay Chafin, Friends of the Norfork National Fish Hatchery board member and event organizer, says the day’s activities and learning opportunities are free. The event is geared to teaching children about the great outdoors, waterways and the rivers.

Two popular events at the Outdoor Adventure are the BB gun and archery ranges. Chafin says Dry Run Creek provides the perfect setting for children to learn to fish.

Children 8 and under will be allowed to fish from the raceway basins where the stockings are held.

Jon Casey, Project Leader at the Hatchery, says the fish in the raceway will be larger this year than in the past, averaging 12 inches.

In addition to these activities, 15-20 vendors will be on site providing other learning opportunities.

Casey says volunteers are needed for Saturday’s event and beyond.
