An Ozark County woman received prison time after admitting to a crime spree in Douglas County earlier this year. According to the Ozark County Times, Courtney Smith of Thornfield pleaded guilty to two counts of tampering with a motor vehicle, fraudulent use of a credit or debit card and property damage. She was sentenced to seven years on each count with sentences to be served concurrently, and she was also ordered to pay restitution to the victims in the case.
Smith was arrested in March at a Walmart in Springfield. She had allegedly stolen a vehicle in Ava in the early morning hours, set on fire, walked to another vehicle and illegally entered and drove away in it. It was reported Smith used the debit cart found in the vehicle to purchase items at different stores in the area. She was allegedly attempting to steal merchandise from the Walmart in Springfield when she was apprehended. The stolen vehicle was reportedly in the parking lot and recovered by police.
In addition, Douglas County Sheriff Chris DeGase said in a July statement Smith was one of three women responsible for setting a July 15th fire in the Douglas County Jail where she was an inmate.
