Gassville resident Andy Schisler told KTLO, Classic Hits and the Boot News he was involved in Thursday morning’s four-vehicle accident, in the vicinity of Arkansas State University Mountain Home Technical College on Highway 62 West, which temporarily blocked all lanes of traffic.According to Schisler, he was traveling on Highway 62 West with his wife, Karen, traveling behind him in a separate vehicle. He says a school bus was apparently getting ready to make a left-hand turn. The driver of the vehicle ahead of him mistakenly thought the bus had it’s warning lights on to let out children and stopped abruptly on the highway.
Andy was able to stop and avoided rear-ending that vehicle and Karen was able to stop to avoid rear-ending Andy’s vehicle, however the vehicle behind Karen was unable to stop and collided with Karen’s vehicle, which pushed her into a collision with Andy’s vehicle, before coming to rest in a ditch.
Karen was taken to Baxter Regional Medical Center where she was treated and released. No other injuries were reported.
Transportation Supervisor for the Mountain Home School District David Pitchford says school bus drivers will activate their emergency flashers from the right side of the road and not from a turning lane. All vehicles, on both sides of the road are required to stop unless there is a median in the road, in which case opposite bound traffic is not required to stop.
