Take the Mountain Home Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) Lodge #45. Add the Mountain Home Junior Auxiliary and support from businesses like the Walmart Foundation and individuals. Then add about 50 children from Mountain Home, Cotter and Norfork and you have all the ingredients for another successful Shop With a Cop event. This year’s event is set for December 9.
For those shopping at Walmart on December 9, they’ll see children alongside law enforcement officers filling carts as they shop for the holidays. Last year, 52 children participated in Shop With a Cop, with the FOP matching a $2,500 Walmart Foundation grant. Along with donations from the community, about $6,000 was spent in the effort to bring cheer to the homes of the children.
The Shop With a Cop began as an FOP effort to ensure area children had gifts under the tree on Christmas. But over time, FOP President Tom Canta says the event became more than just about the children.

Canta says adding the ingredients for the Christmas dinner brought the Junior Auxiliary on board about four years ago with the Shop With a Cop effort.

Canta says while the FOP and JA are ready for this year’s event, contributions are still welcome.

Canta says JA members even wrap the gifts for these children who often put family members ahead of themselves.
