Tomes wins Hillbilly Chili Cookoff

The 22nd edition of the Hillbilly Chili Cookoff had one of its biggest crowds at Bull Shoals-White River State Park. Trieneke Self of the Bull Shoals-Lakeview Rotary Club estimates nearly 3,000 people attended Saturday’s event.

James Tomes took home the top $500 prize after winning the Judged Homestyle Chili contest. Holy Smokes total winnings were $350 after finishing second in both the Judged Homestyle Chili and the People’s Choice Chili divisions. Last year’s champions from Serenity, Inc., finished third this year and left with $100.

Tim Tibbs took the honor of People’s Choice Chili, and he won $200 as a result. Connie’s Cafe of Bull Shoals was selected third, and they donated their $100 winnings to Serenity.

A few other prizes were also handed out Saturday at the park. Mary Zito-Thrash won the Best Judged Salsa award, and she came away with $75. In addition, Sue Reynolds won a $1,000 shopping spree from Harps.
