(AP) _ A Little Rock city board member is pushing for a policy that would make arrests for marijuana use by adults the Police Department’s lowest priority.The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reports that Ward 2 City Director Ken Richardson intends to present the proposal to the city Board of Directors for a March 20th vote if the ordinance is drafted by then.
The policy would make investigations, citations, arrests, property seizures and prosecutions for misdemeanor marijuana offenses the city’s lowest law enforcement priority. It would apply to cases in which the drug was intended for adult personal use.
Richardson says such arrests have unintended consequences like making it difficult or impossible for people to get student loans, continue education or get jobs that pay well.
Police Chief Kenton Buckner declined to comment on the proposal.
