The 16th episode of the 2018 American Idol series on ABC recently closed out its Hollywood Week narrowing contestants down to the top 24. One of those contestants making the cut is 19-year-old Jonny Brens from Saint Augustine, Florida. His sister is Mountain Home High School math teacher Amy Caster.

Caster says Brens didn’t tell his family he was going to audition this year.

Caster says her mom began calling family announcing her brother had secretly auditioned and won the golden ticket to take the trip to Los Angeles for the aptly titled Hollywood Week.

Since then, she says it’s been a whirlwind.

Hollywood Week is considered by many contestants to be the most tense part of the competition. At that point it has been established everyone participating can sing. The real challenge is whether they can make it in the music business.

Brens only had two hours of sleep that night. When watching the first Hollywood Week episode, a person in his group gets sent home due to vocal nodules which cause hoarseness. Caster says the majority of the musicians at this point got the flu or got a cold and according to Brens “it was misery.”

He somehow makes it through. According to American Idol Spoilers, released earlier this year, Brens sails into the top 14. Katy Perry says there’s this “sweet, little sexy thing going on.” Judge Luke Bryan told him he’s got a smooth voice, but wanted to hear him get more into a song so he got him to sing some Michael Buble. He got yeses from Perry and Bryan, but a no from Lionel Richie.
