The sixth annual Ozark Historic Cemetery Stroll, sponsored by the Buffalo National River Partners, will be led by Abby Burnett on Saturday. Burnett is the author of several articles and a book published in 2016 titled “Gone to the Grave: Burial Customs of the Arkansas Ozarks.” Burnett was featured in “Silent Storytellers,” an AETN documentary about cemeteries and tombstone carvers in the Ozarks.

The meeting place is Walnut Grove Cemetery in Boxley Valley, and the stroll begins at 10:00 a.m.. Registration is not required.

To reach Walnut Grove Cemetery, from the junction of Highway 43 and Highway 21, go one-half mile south on Highway 21. Boxley Baptist Church is on the right, and the cemetery is next to it. Additional information and directions to other cemeteries will be provided to participants.

In addition to Walnut Grove Cemetery, the stroll will stop at Beechwoods and Low Gap cemeteries. The Buffalo River Partners recommends packing water and a lunch. The stroll party will eat lunch at Jasper’s Bradley Park before continuing on to the final stop at Jasper cemetery. Arrangements have been made for descendants of the early settlers buried in the cemeteries to join the event. They will speak about their ancestors and the contributions they made to the area.

In case of rain, the stroll will be rescheduled for Saturday, April 21st.
