The accomplishments of students at Mountain Home Kindergarten and Nelson-Wilks-Herron Elementary School were in the spotlight Tuesday morning. Arkansas Education Commissioner and former state senator Johnny Key was joined by Deputy Commissioner Dr. Ivy Pfeffer, Assistant Commissioner Stacy Smith and State Senator Joyce Elliott as the group visited Mountain Home Kindergarten and Nelson-Wilks-Herron Elementary School to celebrate the Mountain Home School District’s work with the RISE Arkansas initiative. It was Key’s first return to Mountain Home in nearly four years.
Key came back to the school district his children had attended, and he says he was impressed to see the progress of the initiative from the teachers and their students.

RISE, or Reading Initiative for Student Excellence, encourages a culture of reading by coordinating a statewide reading campaign with community partners, parents and teachers to establish the importance of reading in homes, schools and communities. Key says in his role as education commissioner, he has looked to improve reading skills of public school students throughout the Natural State.

Key says he has visited other school districts in Arkansas to view their progress with RISE. He adds his department is looking at improvements in reading to filter across the state in the next three to five years.
