KTLO, Classic Hits 101.7 and The Boot, throughout the year highlights the work of dedicated professionals as part of our Salute to Service series. In this edition, Desiree Underwood and Beverly Crabb are recognized as the recent recipients of the first DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses at Baxter Regional Medical Center.
BRMC Vice President of Patient Care Services and Chief Nursing Officer Shannon Nachtigal says the DAISY Foundation provides the hospital a way to let its nurses know their work is highly valued.
Underwood is a resident of Cotter and has been a registered nurse for years. The award was presented to her from a man, who had been in a motorcycle accident, and his wife.
Underwood explains.
Listen:
Underwood was getting ready to leave for vacation when she says her boss told her she needed to interview someone before she left. She was surprised when she came into a room surrounded by staff and the family she helped, who were there to present her the prestigious award.
Listen:
Later that day Crabb was presented her award.
Crabb has been an RN for 33 years. She handles discharges and patient transitional care.
She says she was surprised to learn she had received the DAISY award as well. A woman by the name of Beverly Green presented the award to her for the care Crabb had given to Green’s mother.
Listen:
Crabb humbly says, like her associates, she was just doing her duty.

The DAISY Award is presented in December is part of the DAISY Foundation’s program to recognize the efforts nurses perform everyday. DAISY is an acronym for “diseases attacking the immune system.” The foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization in memory of Patrick Barnes.
Barnes was diagnosed in late 1999 with the auto-immune disease Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), and he died eight weeks after being admitted to the hospital. Barnes’ father, Mark, says the foundation and award were the family’s way of thanking nurses for the gifts they give their patients and families on a daily basis.
