The Mountain Home Elks Lodge has been recognized as a leader in the Elks Veterans Leather Program. The Mountain Home Elks Lodge received a certificate at a state convention recognizing the 1,251 deer hides they collected locally, the most out of any city in the state of Arkansas.

The Elks Leather Program was initiated in 1948 when the Elks of California launched a hide-gathering program during hunting season. To make the program available to all VA medical centers, the Elks National Veterans Service Commission arranged funding to pay for tanning and shipping of hides worldwide. Today, over 19 states, including Arkansas, donate or are developing plans to support the leather program.

McAleese explained what exactly goes into the local leather program.
