A Mountain View man wanted following an investigation into a possible stolen vehicle in the Fredonia Cemetery area was captured in White County. According to Stone County Sheriff Lance Bonds, 47-year-old Phillip Callahan was arrested Friday evening in Beebe and transported to the Stone County Detention Center later that night on counts of parole absconding, kidnapping, felony fleeing and terroristic threatening. He is currently being held without bond.
Stone County Sheriff Lance Bonds said Friday during the investigation of the possible stolen vehicle Tuesday, an officer from his department spotted another suspicious vehicle in the same area.
When the investigator attempted to stop the suspicious vehicle, the driver fled at a high rate of speed in excess of 100 miles per hour. The investigator identified the driver as Callahan. During the pursuit, Callahan destroyed a locked gate when he drove through it. It was later learned after crashing through the gate, Callahan attempted to set the vehicle on fire. With the investigator closing in, the Stone County man was unsuccessful in burning the vehicle. Callahan and another male fled on foot into a wooded area off of Sunny Land Road. A female was also located in the area, but is not considered a suspect in this incident.
Sheriff Bonds says after he developed leads of Callahan possibly being in the Beebe area, he contacted the Beebe Police Department and coordinated a plan to arrest Callahan. Callahan was apprehended at Walmart in Beebe at approximately 6:30 Friday evening and taken into custody without incident.
Callahan was also reportedly in possession of an undisclosed amount of methamphetamine and a device used to smoke methamphetamine. He was later transported to Stone County, but he is expected to be charged in connection with possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamine) by the Beebe Police Department at a later date.
