A brief Friday evening vehicle pursuit led to the arrest of a Henderson man on multiple charges. According to Baxter County Sheriff John Montgomery, 35-year-old James Weeks was booked into the Baxter County Detention Center on felony counts of possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamine), possession of drug paraphernalia and probation violation and misdemeanor counts of possession of a controlled substance (marijuana), disregarding a stop sign and fleeing in a vehicle. His bond is set at $15,000 on the new charges, but he is being held without bond on the probation violation.
A deputy initiated a traffic stop after reportedly observing a pickup truck running a stop sign at the intersection of U.S. Highway 62 and County Road 279 and identified the driver as Weeks. The officer returned to his patrol vehicle to run a driver’s license and warrant check, and the return indicated Weeks was on active probation with Arkansas Community Corrections and had a search waiver on file. When Weeks was directed to step out of the truck, he allegedly sped away in his truck heading east across the Henderson bridge at a high rate of speed. During the pursuit, the deputy reportedly observed Weeks tossing a bag out of the passenger window attempting to throw it over the bridge and into the water, but it landed in the roadway.
Weeks pulled over and stopped on the opposite end of the bridge and was taken into custody. The bag was later retrieved from the road, and it contained approximately eight grams of methamphetamine, marijuana and paraphernalia. The items were seized and taken into evidence.
Weeks has been booked into the Baxter County Detention Center 14 times since 2004. He is scheduled to appear in Baxter County Circuit Court later this month.
