COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) _ Authorities have wrapped up a case against a 14-year-old girl who illegally killed an elk in central Missouri, but no details are being provided because she is a juvenile.

The Columbia Missourian reports that the girl said she thought the elk was a deer and shot it in November while hunting with her father in northern Boone County.

Missouri Department of Conservation spokesman Robert Hemmelgarn says
conservation agents consulted with juvenile court authorities who reached what he described as an “appropriate resolution.”

Hemmelgarn says an investigation into the genetic origins of the elk is
ongoing. The meat from the elk was tested to make sure it was safe to eat and given to families in need. Hemmelgarn says the antlers and hide are being used for educational purposes.
