An Izard County teen competed this weekend in the 2018 Braille Challenge finals, a competition between visually impaired students across the country who read Braille. Macy James, who will be a sophomore this fall at Calico Rock, was one of 10 finalists to qualify for the national finals held in Los Angeles.
James has taken the title for the Arkansas State Braille Championship for the past eight years, but this was her first time getting to compete at the national level. She competed Saturday for the title, but did not place within the top three rankings, the only ones officially announced at the competition.
Though she didn’t win, James is the first person from Arkansas to ever compete at the national challenge. Additionally, James says she made a good friend from Canada. Following the competition, James says she will sightsee with her family before heading home to Calico Rock.
